If so Mayo County Council Arts Office in partnership with the TF Royal is organising a not to be missed Creative Careers Day. The Creative Careers Day is one of the many events that make up Excel, Mayo County Council’s youth arts programme.

Creative enterprises such as digital media, film, art, design and the Irish language have significant potential for future economic development in the western region. That’s according to the Western Development Commission (WDC) who are devising a strategy for the region’s creative economy in conjunction with regional businesses and a high-level industry advisory group.

When international comparisons are factored in, the western region has the potential to create at least an extra 2,000 jobs in the creative sector, according to Gillian Buckley, chief executive of the Western Development Commission. Ms Buckley was speaking at the launch of the WDC’s report Creative West: The Creative Sector in the Western Region, the first study of its kind conducted in Ireland. She added: “There are 4,779 creative businesses operating in the western region, directly employing over 11,000 people or three per cent of all employment in the region. This generates an annual turnover of €534m and directly contributes €270m to the gross value added of the regional economy. It is therefore a major economic contributor to the region that we believe can be grown significantly, even in these difficult economic times.”

The Western Development Commission, in association with photo website Pix.ie, has launched a photo competition to highlight the Creative West as the Western Region rapidly becomes Ireland’s hub for the creative industries with over 11,000 jobs in the sector according to a recent WDC survey.

If Ireland truly wants to develop and be at the cutting edge of the smart economy, then an integrated national strategy to develop the creative sector is essential.
